CANADA - Durham calls for election candidate crime checks.

If a person done a minor crime what punishment should be given? I am sure at one point York School Board Trustee for Markham area also done some minor crime & Pardon granted amnesty for his crime ?. DURHAM  Candidates in municipal elections should be required to undergo a criminal reference check, according to Regional councillors.  Durham Regional councillors endorsed a request from Oshawa Councillor John Henry and Brock Mayor Larry O'Connor that asks the Province to change the Elections Act, requiring criminal reference checks for candidates.

Their motion noted "accepting elected office is the highest order of public service; and elected officials are responsible for service delivery and financial management of their City and Region." Federal parties do criminal reference checks on their candidates, Coun.. Henry said.  Voter turnout is low, he said, because people have lost confidence in their elected officials. "All we're asking is to bring that confidence back," he added.  Minor sports coaches, Scout and Guide leaders and people who handle money for charitable organizations all need a criminal reference check, Coun. Henry noted. Coun. O'Connor said when he was elected as an MPP in 1990, he had to disclose all his financial holdings to a judge. The motion is going to the provincial Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing for consideration.
