Protecting Jaffna’s Water ResourcesWhen I visited the Water Resources Exhibition held in Nallur, Jaffna, I had the opportunity to attend a very informative and educational session on how we can protect our ponds and the groundwater resources connected to them.In particular, the students of the University of Jaffna explained many important aspects in a very clear and simple way.Their explanations helped me understand how carefully pond desilting and deepening work needs to be carried out.The clay layer at the bottom of a pond is particularly important. When desilting a pond, if we dig excessively deep without understanding the natural layers of soil beneath it, we may disturb the natural structure that helps retain water. They also explained that digging unnecessarily deep can potentially lead to saltwater-related problems and affect the quality of groundwater. Therefore, when contracts are given for pond desilting, it is important not to simply approach the work as a matter of using machinery to dig as deep as possible. The local community and temple authorities should also be consulted.Their local knowledge and experience about the pond’s history, soil conditions and the depth of the clay layer can be extremely valuable in determining how far the pond should safely be excavated. The students also gave a very clear explanation about the different types of wells found in Jaffna, their characteristics and their uses. They particularly discussed tube wells, including their potential impacts on the water system and the possible changes they can cause to groundwater quality and groundwater conditions. It was also interesting to learn about the close relationship between the wells, ponds and groundwater that we depend on in our daily lives, and how excessive or inappropriate use of water resources in one area can affect the overall groundwater balance of the region. For the people of Jaffna, who depend heavily on groundwater, protecting our ponds, wells and groundwater is not simply about protecting water sources…It is about protecting the water security and livelihoods of future generations. A truly valuable and eye-opening session by the students of the University of Jaffna, giving many visitors a better understanding of the importance of protecting the precious water resources of our land.
